PRACTICE GOOD
HOME SECURITY HABITS

Avoid inviting criminals and making it easy for them. Here are some things you can do to improve your home security profile for free!

Think Like A Burglar!

What would you prefer if you were a burglar? Opportunities that are high reward, easy & low risk. Don't make it easy!
  • Don’t literally leave the door open to burglars. Keep doors, windows, rolling garage doors closed & locked even when working around the house. A partially open window is an open invitation to a burglar.
  • Check if your rolling garage door fully closes before driving off.
  • Always lock the door between your house and garage. This is becoming an increasingly popular entry method.
  • Never open your door to strangers. Talk through the door if needed.
  • No spare hidden keys around the house.
  • Always arm your alarm. Arm it fully when you are out. Arm it in ‘at home’ mode when you are in.
  • Don’t lend your keys, most keys can be easily duplicated.
  • Don’t idle or warm up car on the driveway with the keys in the ignition.
  • Don’t announce/post vacation/absence from home on social media, vmail, or email auto-replies. Looking up your address is easy.
  • Turn off location tagging on photos & videos and be careful posting details.
  • Be careful with hired help in and around your house. They can unlatch a window after using your bathroom to make it easy to break-in later. You can’t tell who is a part-time burglar by looking at them. If a worker is coming to your home, put valuables out of sight and watch what you say. Most are good people but it’s better to be safe than sorry.
  • Pick up flyers on your property promptly.
